The horse-shaped magnet is a nice size for little hands, and watching it tug the compass needle from across the table never gets old. My kid has been testing which end points north for an hour straight, and it's held up great so far.
The compass needle swings wildly the second you bring the horseshoe magnet near it, which makes the whole magnetism idea click instantly for kids. Took this to a classroom and the assorted colors made it easy for groups to grab their own set.
My 7-year-old spent a solid hour moving the ceramic magnets around the compass needle, watching it swing each time. The horse magnet is her favorite, and now she keeps asking what else is magnetic in the kitchen.
